These days getting an appointment with the doctor can take an age, although it is still my first port of call whenever I’m feeling unwell.
Luckily, I’ve also learned that natural remedies can truly supercharge your recovery.
When I’m sick, I tend to crave all natural goodness and remedies to help get me back on my feet sooner. Many of these suggestions have been passed down through my family for generations, offering gentle, effective ways to care for yourself and your home when illness strikes.
Here’s how I use simple, natural methods to feel better faster.
1. Freshen Up the Air

A stuffy room can make you feel worse. I always start by opening the windows to let in fresh air and improve ventilation. It helps clear out germs, odors, and stagnant air, making the environment feel more uplifting and breathable.
I always find this one really clears my head, even with the most stubborn of colds.
2. A Clean Toothbrush for a Clean Start

When I’m under the weather, I switch to a fresh toothbrush to reduce the risk of reintroducing germs. If I don’t have a new one on hand, I clean my toothbrush by soaking it in hot water or swirling it in a glass of vinegar. This simple step ensures I’m not reinfecting myself during recovery.
Cleaning hands, disposing of tissues and all round hygiene goes without saying to stop redistribution of germs around the house.
3. Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces

Frequent touch points like light switches, door handles, and remote controls can harbour germs and this is particularly important when there are sickness germs in the house. I make it a point to disinfect them regularly to minimise the spread of illness.
A quick wipe with a disinfectant does wonders for peace of mind and cleanliness.
4. Immune-Boosting Drink

One of my go-to remedies is a warm, immune-boosting drink packed with natural ingredients. Here’s my Nan’s recipe which I swear by:
- 1/2 lemon
- 3 coins of ginger
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- A pinch of black pepper
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
This drink is not only soothing but also loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. I sip it slowly to soothe my throat and support my immune system.
5. Vapour Rub for Cough Relief

For persistent coughs, I apply homemade vapour rub to the soles of my feet before popping socks on top. Here’s my favorite recipe:
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 25 drops eucalyptus oil
- 12 drops peppermint oil
Since eucalyptus and peppermint oils aren’t suitable for young children, I use an alternative version my children when they are unwell::
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 10 drops pine essential oil
Both versions are highly effective and provide a natural way to ease coughing and congestion. Apply and then pop your socks on. This works a treat for me over night!
What Works for You?
These simple home remedies have become part of mine and my family’s wellness routine when we are feeling under the weather. While they’re not a substitute for medical care, they help create a cleaner, calmer environment and provide gentle, natural relief. It goes without saying you should always consult your doctor first!
