My kitchen windows had seen far better days. The seal had bust and the glass was cloudy. I couldn’t even crack a window when I was cooking because they were jammed shut. Even on the clearest of days I couldn’t see the garden that I’d spent two years getting up to scratch. Enough was enough. The time for drastic action had come…

Despite the state of my windows, my vision was clear. The first question to answer was; Can I change my window into a door? I quickly found that yes you can and it was much more straight forward than I had anticipated. The process is known as “Brick Out” – simply because some bricks are taken out from beneath the window to create space for doors.
It does take careful planning and for once, it wasn’t really a task I felt we could take on ourselves. The precision needed to cut and remove the bricks would require a professional.
I wanted to remove the window to install a door to create a flowing space from the end of my kitchen into the garden. I wanted to make the perfect space for entertaining with easy kitchen access. So I did what I do best, and got to researching.
I found Alexander Windows on Instagram, and it struck me as a family run company doing things a bit differently.
I’ve bought new windows before and to be honest I found the process lacking in detail, confusing and got frustrated when the burly window fitters seemed more interested in talking to my husband than me. My husband is very handy when it comes to DIY but for a big purchase like windows and doors I need to be in the detail to make sure everything is perfect!
That’s why stepping in to Alexander Windows showroom was such a breathe of fresh air. The showroom had it all in terms of variety and example to see in situ, the consultation felt like a real dialogue and made the process even clearer to me.
In the middle of the consultation we turned attention from the doors to my smaller, secondary window. I hadn’t considered it but it made so much sense to me when the team suggested a large picture window to maximise the light and the view of my patio. I wouldn’t have thought of it without the consultation – and I’m so grateful it was suggested to me!

The transformation has been mind blowing. In just under two days, the installation team have transformed my kitchen from a space I hid from my guests to the perfect summer flow through to my garden. They were professional, polite and courteous and I almost forgot they were here – which is rare when you have work going on in your home. The finish is exceptional.

The space now feels much grander, more spacious, and light is filling the room. My mood, and even my cooking, has been transformed by loving the space I’m in!

I’ve had friends over on our patio and we simply leave the doors open with the radio on for a relaxed early evening vibe, and the fridge is now easily accesses to top up the drinks without interrupting conversation. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
If you’re planning to turn your window to a door, or turn a smaller window in to a picture window, I’d urge you to get in touch with Alexander Windows.

Turning my window into a door transformed my home in so many ways. It turned my kitchen nightmare into a kitchen dream, it turned my garden into the perfect entertaining space, and it turned a huge corner in my renovation journey.
